The history of movie awards is both littered with temporarily popular garbage and vacant of many, many - too many - worthwhile but unheralded films. As a film critic, not a blogger or fanboy, I must lament that awards have come to overshadow critical thinking and artistic judgment. A tribute to Chile's artistic heritage, Endless Poetry is also an ode to the quest for beauty and inner truth, as a universal force capable of changing one's life forever, written by a man who has dedicated his life and career to creating spiritual and artistic awareness across the globe.
Discussion about awards and red carpet appearances, rather than film content, proves this. The hype has become more important than the actual films. Most shameful of all, awards season has turned into a carnival of immodesty, featuring fake runway fashion shows that have nothing to do with the art of cinema but carry some weird, distant relationship to the world of celebrity, which once played into the mystique of Hollywood, but now is just a demonstration of self-congratulatory excess. In a way, the movie trailer has become more important than the story being told. Most producers don't seem interested in a viewer's emotional, intellectual or social experience while watching a film. It's difficult for movies to affect the collective cultural conscience when the executives who make them are too busy promoting one after the other.
